I’ve Been Told I Have TMJ. What Can I Do?

If you have been told you “have TMJ” and are experiencing jaw pain, headaches, clicking, or difficulty chewing, you are not alone. Millions of people struggle with temporomandibular joint disorders without fully understanding what is causing their symptoms or where to turn for proper treatment. At Everwell TMJ and Sleep, we help patients identify the root cause of jaw pain and develop customized treatment plans designed to improve comfort, function, and overall quality of life. The term “TMJ” actually refers to the temporomandibular joint itself, the joint that connects your jaw to your skull.

Everyone has two TMJs, one on each side of the jaw. A more accurate term for problems involving these joints is TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder) or TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder). While many people casually say they “have TMJ,” what they are really describing is dysfunction or inflammation involving the jaw joints, muscles, tendons, or surrounding structures. The temporomandibular joint is one of the smallest yet most complex joints in the human body. Unlike many joints, it not only opens and closes like a hinge but also slides and translates during movement. Because the TMJs are located near the ears, facial nerves, muscles, and surrounding structures, symptoms can often feel confusing or difficult to explain. Patients with TMJ disorders may experience jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, headaches, ear pressure, facial tension, neck pain, difficulty chewing, jaw locking, and tooth sensitivity. These symptoms can significantly affect sleep, stress levels, concentration, and overall quality of life. There are many possible causes of TMD and TMJ dysfunction, including teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), stress and muscle tension, jaw injuries, arthritis, bite alignment problems, chronic inflammation, and sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. Because there are multiple potential causes, an accurate diagnosis is essential for determining the most effective treatment approach. One of the most common frustrations patients experience is being given a basic over-the-counter mouthguard or generic night guard without a complete evaluation of the jaw joints and muscles.

While some appliances may help protect the teeth from grinding, they do not always address the underlying cause of TMJ dysfunction. At Everwell TMJ and Sleep, providers with advanced training in TMJ disorders use customized orthotics and therapeutic splints designed to reduce pressure on the jaw joints, create a more stable jaw position, relax overworked muscles, improve bite function, promote healing, and reduce clenching and grinding behaviors. These appliances are carefully designed and adjusted to fit each patient’s unique anatomy and diagnosis. For patients with internal joint derangement or degenerative joint disease, regenerative therapies are becoming an increasingly promising option. One advanced treatment is Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy, a regenerative procedure designed to support healing and tissue repair within the temporomandibular joint. The process involves drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, processing it to concentrate platelets, growth factors, and fibrin, and then injecting the PRF material into the affected joint area. This minimally invasive treatment may help reduce inflammation, promote tissue regeneration, support cartilage healing, improve joint function, and decrease pain and discomfort. Because PRF uses the patient’s own natural healing components, it offers a biologically compatible approach to TMJ treatment without synthetic materials.TMJ disorders are complex and should be treated by professionals with advanced training in temporomandibular joint dysfunction and dental sleep medicine. At Everwell TMJ and Sleep, our team has completed advanced education and hands-on training in TMJ therapy, orthotic treatment, and regenerative procedures designed to improve patient outcomes and long-term comfort. We work closely with patients to create personalized treatment plans focused on reducing pain, restoring function, and improving overall health and quality of life.
